I will be hosting two zoom clinics in preparation for the Fall 2021 TMEA All-Region/All-State Etudes. These etudes will be selected from the Fourteen Characteristic Studies found in the Arban Complete Conservatory Method. The clinics are being held in the very early summer to allow students maximum summer preparation time. The first clinic will focus on fundamental preparation prior to approaching the Arban Characteristic Studies and the second clinic will focus on the Characteristic Studies themselves.
Clinic 1 - Preparing for Arban
May 31 - June 2, 2021 - 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
The first clinic will focus on preparatory fundamental exercises to aid in understanding the Arban Characteristic Studies with special attention paid to 1 -production (sound), 2 - movement (technique & flexibility), and 3 - articulation. Students will learn basic music theory terminology (scales, arpeggios, chords, major/minor/dominant 7th/diminished 7th, etc...) that occurs frequently within the Characteristic Studies and will be given exercises to play based on that terminology. One of the main goals of this clinic will be to provide the student with supplemental practice materials that will aid their understanding of the Arban Characteristic Studies.

Arban Characteristic Studies: An Overview
June 7 - 9, 2021 - 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
The second clinic will focus on the 14 Arban Characteristic Studies themselves, of which three will be selected and announced in late July as next year's TMEA All-Region/All-State audition material. The goal of this clinic is not mastery of all 14 etudes in three days but rather to give the students an informed first look at each etude, a chance to learn what is contained within, an idea of how to begin practicing each etude, and the opportunity to ask as many questions as needed in order to feel comfortable starting to tackle these rather daunting etudes.
